DC Introductory Materials
Conversion is Our Goal:

How will I deepen my conversion in studying the Doctrine and Covenants this year? Besides reading and taking notes, I need to ask questions in pray and be thankful for answers I receive; and I need to act on promptings from the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 5:17 My goal should be to become I knew creature in Christ. I can only do this through active application to the principles I am learning and through strengthening my faith in Jesus Christ and a trust that He will help me improve.
“This means relying on Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ to help us change our hearts, our views, our actions, and our very natures…It requires consistent, daily efforts to understand and live the gospel. True conversion requires the influence of the Holy Ghost.”
John 16:13 The Holy Ghost can guide me to all truth, if I am humble enough to follow Him. “The Holy Ghost purifies our hearts. He inspires in us a desire to live by truth, and He whispers to us ways to do this.”
John 14:26 “ But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
I need to invite the Spirit into my studies, and I need to seek the Spirit in my daily walk through each day. I have covenanted to also remember Jesus Christ. And I have His promise, that if I do, I’ll always have His Spirit to be with me.
“This goal should govern our choices and guide our thoughts and actions. We should seek after whatever invites the influence of the Spirit and reject whatever drives that influence away.”
If I live worthily to have the Holy Ghost with me during this life, I will also be found worthy (through the grace of Heavenly Father and Jesus), to be in Their presence in the next life.
Using Come, Follow Me—For Home and Church: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/come-follow-me-for-home-and-church-doctrine-and-covenants-2025/002-using?lang=eng
This Come Follow Me resource is for everyone who would like to study the Doctrine and Covenants.
Study the gospel at home. Do so on your own, with the spirit of devotion to the Lord. Do so with your family. Church meeting are a time for us to help strengthen each other, but you need your own spiritual nourishment from devoting time to learning and living the gospel each day.
Moroni 6:4 Be actively engaged in ministering to the members of the Palmyra Ward, your family, and your community.
“As you study, follow the Spirit’s guidance to find eternal truths that are meaningful to you. Look for God’s messages for you, and follow the promptings you receive.”
Ideas to Improve Learning at Home and at Church: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/come-follow-me-for-home-and-church-doctrine-and-covenants-2025/003-ideas-to-improve-learning-at-home-and-at-church?lang=eng
“You are encouraged to use the outlines in this
resource as you prepare to teach.” No one should try to present everything
found in the week’s study guide. Pick principles, develop a focused outline to
provide a structure for your class’s discussion, and ask engaging questions.
“As you prepare to teach, start by having your own experiences in the scriptures. Your most important preparation will occur as you search the scriptures and seek personal inspiration from the Holy Ghost. “ To teach with the Spirit, you must invite the Spirit into your personal study. You should also follow the Spirit to determine which principles are most needed for your class. “Look for eternal truths.”
“Learning the gospel, at its best, is home centered and Church supported.” There is no need for you to reteach everything found in the manual. Encourage your class to study for themselves. You can best do this by allowing each member time to engage with the class by sharing their own learning experiences.
“Give them opportunities to share their experiences, thoughts, and questions about the scripture passages they’ve read at home. Invite them to share the eternal truths they have found. This is more important than covering a certain amount of material.”
Aaronic Priesthood Quorums and Young Women Classes
“In addition to helping each other learn the gospel of Jesus Christ, these groups also meet to counsel together about accomplishing the work of salvation and exaltation….each quorum or class meeting should begin with a member of the quorum or class presidency leading a discussion about their efforts. For example, they could counsel together about their efforts to live the gospel, minister to people in need, share the gospel, or participate in temple and family history work.”
“An instructor leads the class or quorum in learning the gospel together. Adult leaders or members of the class or quorum can be assigned to teach….People assigned to teach should prepare by using the learning suggestions in the weekly outline of Come, Follow Me.”
appendix D provides a sample agenda.
Primary
“Your preparation to
teach Primary begins as you study the scriptures personally and with your
family.” As you first seek revelation for yourself and your family, you will be
better prepared to ask the Lord’s help in teaching these truths to the child
and ask for the revelation you need to do so. “Be prayerful. The Spirit can
inspire you with ideas to help them learn the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
Look to the sections
in each week’s lesson guide, “Ideas for Teaching Children.”
“Think of these
ideas as suggestions to spark your inspiration. You know the children in your
Primary class—and you will get to know them even better as you interact with
them in class. God knows them too, and He will inspire you with the best ways
to teach and bless them.”
Even if the children
have done some of the activities at home, that’s okay. Repetition is an
important part of learning. Allow the children to share what they have learned
at home.

Ideas to
Improve Learning at Home and at Church: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/come-follow-me-for-home-and-church-doctrine-and-covenants-2025/003-ideas-to-improve-learning-at-home-and-at-church?lang=eng
- How can I invite the Spirit into my
study? I need to start having a kneel down prayer before I begin. I am not
in the habit of doing so.
- How can I focus on the Savior in my
study? I need to look for the characteristics of the Savior as I read the
Doctrine and Covenants and seek to be more refined in my own life.
- How can I take advantage of everyday
learning moments? I can be better about recording spiritual impressions
and I can be better about testifying truths I learn to others.
- How can I encourage family and class
members to study the scriptures on their own and share what they are
learning? I need to do these things myself and ask that the Lord will
testify of truth that Bob and I share with our families.
Pray for Understanding
“The scriptures are
the word of God, so ask Him for help to understand them.”
Look for truths about Jesus Christ
All things testify
of Christ. Consider marking verses that testify of Him.
2 Nephi
11:4 “My soul delighteth in proving unto my people the truth of
the coming of Christ.”
Moses
6:63 All things bear record of Him. “
Listen to the Spirit
“Pay attention to
your thoughts and feelings…These impressions may be what your Heavenly Father
wants you to learn.”
Record your impressions
You can mark your
scriptures, and you can record your impressions in a scripture journal. “You
could also keep a journal of the insights, feelings, and impressions you
receive.”
Share what you’re learning with others
“Discussing insights
from your personal study is a good way to teach others, and it also helps
strengthen your understanding of what you have read. Share what you’re learning
with family members and friends (in person or digitally), and invite them to do
the same.”
Relate the scriptures to your life
How do these teachings
relate to our day? What can I learn from the experiences of others in the scriptures?
Can I see myself in them? How is the Spirit directing me to improve and do
better?
Ask questions as you study
As you study the
scriptures, questions may come to mind…Ponder these questions and look for
answers as you continue studying the scriptures.” Also, take the questions to
God in prayer.
Use scripture study helps
Topical
Guide, Bible
Dictionary, Guide
to the Scriptures
Consider the context of the scriptures
Not much else is
worse than quoting scriptures (or people) out of context.
“You can find meaningful insights about a scripture passage as you consider its
context, including the circumstances or setting it came from. For example,
knowing the background and beliefs of the people God spoke to can help you
better understand the intent of His words. You can learn about them in Saints, Revelations
in Context, the section headings in the Doctrine and Covenants, and other
resources.”
Study the words of latter-day prophets and apostles
What have the latter-day
prophets and apostles taught about the principles you find in the scriptures?
What is written in the other Standard Works that provides clarification and
support?
Live by what you learn
“Listen to what the
Spirit prompts you to do as you read, and then act on these promptings.”
Use music
“Use sacred music to
invite the Spirit and to deepen your faith and testimony of gospel truths.”
Memorize scriptures
Put a scripture in
your journal to use each letter as a heading for a day, and read it each day as
you write in your journal, and commit it to memory.
Share object lessons
Draw, find, or take a picture
Work on using
photography and art to display your testimony of the things you learn.
Dramatize a story
Role-play
Be flexible at home (and with your grown children and
your grandchildren)
“Share eternal truth
naturally in your conversations or share a meaningful scripture in a way that
doesn’t seem preachy or overbearing…Be prayerful and follow the promptings of
the Spirit.”
Teacher council meetings for parents.
Will our ward
provide this?
General Handbook, 17.5
“The ward council
may organize teacher council meetings for parents to help them improve gospel
teaching in the home. Like other teacher council meetings, these are held
during the 50-minute class time on Sunday.
“In these meetings,
parents counsel together about how to apply principles of Christlike teaching
as they teach their children. They use Teaching
in the Savior’s Way as a resource, including the section titled “Home
and Family” (pages 30–31). They can also discuss the teaching and scripture
study suggestions in Come, Follow Me, such as the section titled “Preparing
Your Children for a Lifetime on God’s Covenant Path.”
“The ward council
oversees and schedules teacher council meetings for parents. They determine
whether to invite specific parents to attend or to extend an invitation to all
parents in the ward.
“A member of the
Sunday School presidency usually leads the meetings. However, the bishopric may
ask another member to lead them.
“For more
information, see “Teacher Council Meetings” in Teaching in the Savior’s
Way (pages 38–39).”
