The Witnesses of the Book of Mormon
Moroni showed the plates
to Joseph, Oliver, David and Martin.
Lucy Mack Smith described what effect this experience had on these witnesses.
Prior to this, Joseph
felt entirely alone in the world. A great burden was lifted from him, because
he knew these three others would testify to the truth of what they had all been
shown.
Lucy heard testimony from
the three that agrees with what we read at the beginning of The Book of Mormon:
Another Testament of Jesus Christ.
Martin Harris felt overcome
with gratitude that he saw an angel and saw the plates, and that God would
reveal these things even to him. They all rejoiced together.
Lucy also was present when the eight witnesses returned from seeing the
plates:
After the eight were allowed
to see and handle the plates, Moroni returned to Joseph to take charge of the
plates once again.
“…That evening we held a
meeting, in which all the witnesses bore testimony to the facts as stated
above; and all of our family, even to Don Carlos [Smith], who was but
14 years of age, testified of the truth of the latter day dispensation—that
it was then fully ushered in.”
Others saw the plates in
addition to the twelve mentioned above:
Mary Whitmer was shown
the plates by an angel for the sacrifices she had made while Joseph, Emma, and
Oliver resided in her home. “You have been very faithful and diligent in your
labors,” Moroni told her. “It is proper, therefore, that you should receive a
witness that your faith may be strengthened.”
Another righteous Mary
that the Lord felt to bless because of her faithfulness.
