10 Learn of Me
Learn of Me
Martin chose faith. In order for The Book of Mormon to be printed, he mortgaged his farm; against the wishes of his wife, and at the scrutiny of his associates. What about you? Have you chosen faith in Jesus Christ? Will you continue to choose Him and walk His covenant path?
“What is the gospel of Jesus Christ worth to me? What am I willing to sacrifice to help build God’s kingdom?”
Doctrine and Covenants 19:18 Jesus sacrificed everything to follow God’s plan for Him. He bled from every pore, because of His love for me.
Saints, 1:76–84 (I’ve listened while exercising; but I need to get back to doing this; it’s been a while.)
“I, God, am
endless.”
Doctrine and Covenants 19:1–12
Revelation for Martin (and for us).
verse 1 Jesus is indeed the beginning and the end.
He was with Father from the start, and He has followed Him in complete humility
and trust. He created this world. He atoned for you and me; through Him we will
be resurrected, and our Father’s purposes for us will be realized; immortality
and eternal life for the faithful.
verses 1–12 Jesus has always been our Redeemer. Endless and Eternal are names that
are attributed to Him. He is also gracious and kind. The punishments for the
unfaithful will not necessary last forever, but the judgment will be the Lord’s
and the consequences assigned by Him Who is Eternal.
Jesus Christ suffered so that I can repent and come unto
Him.
Doctrine and Covenants 19:15–20
Jesus’s disciples describe the suffering of their Lord, because they witnessed it. But Jesus lived it, too. He describes His suffering in Doctrine and Covenants 19:15–20:
15 Therefore I
command you to repent—repent, lest I smite you by the rod of my
mouth, and by my wrath, and by my anger, and your sufferings be
sore—how sore you know not, how exquisite you know not, yea, how hard to bear
you know not.
16 For behold,
I, God, have suffered these things for all, that
they might not suffer if they would repent;
17 But if they
would not repent they must suffer even as I;
18 Which suffering caused
myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed
at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit—and would that I
might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink—
19 Nevertheless,
glory be to the Father, and I partook and finished my preparations
unto the children of men.
20 Wherefore, I
command you again to repent, lest I humble you with my almighty
power; and that you confess your sins, lest you suffer
these punishments of which I have spoken, of which in the smallest,
yea, even in the least degree you have tasted at the time I withdrew
my Spirit.
Jesus was willing to
suffer because He loves me, and He loves all God’s children.
John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down
his life for his friends.
He also died for all His enemies, to open the gift of repentance and
cleanliness to all, through faith in Him.
Mosiah 3:7 And lo, he
shall suffer temptations, and pain of body, hunger, thirst, and
fatigue, even more than man can suffer, except it be unto death; for
behold, blood cometh from every pore, so great shall be
his anguish for the wickedness and the abominations of his people.
Alma 7:11–12 And lo, he
shall suffer temptations, and pain of body, hunger, thirst, and
fatigue, even more than man can suffer, except it be unto death; for
behold, blood cometh from every pore, so great shall be
his anguish for the wickedness and the abominations of his people.
Doctrine and Covenants 18:10–13 10 Remember
the worth of souls is great in the sight of God;
11 For, behold,
the Lord your Redeemer suffered death in the flesh;
wherefore he suffered the pain of all men, that all men
might repent and come unto him.
12 And he
hath risen again from the dead, that he might bring all men unto him,
on conditions of repentance.
13 And how
great is his joy in the soul that repenteth!

Doctrine and Covenants 19:16–19
Increase reverence and gratitude for Jesus.
Read Doctrine
and Covenants 19:16–19 with the children.
6 For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent;

verse 16 What did Jesus suffer for us?
Mosiah 3:7 And lo, he
shall suffer temptations, and pain of body, hunger, thirst, and
fatigue, even more than man can suffer, except it be unto death; for
behold, blood cometh from every pore, so great shall be his anguish for
the wickedness and the abominations of his people.
What can we do to
show gratitude for Jesus?
You and your children
could look in Hymns or the Children’s Songbook for songs that help you express your
feelings about Jesus Christ.
For Kids
Jesus Christ obeyed Heavenly Father, even when it was
hard.
Doctrine and Covenants 19:18–19, 24
Jesus loved living life and teaching and serving the people. He loved performing miracles that blessed people. It was hard for Him to gift that up when He was so young. His suffering was so painful. But He chose to do Heavenly Father’s will, because He loves our Heavenly Father, and He loves you and me. He was always obedient, and He wanted to do what Heavenly Father asked Him to do.
How difficult do you think His sufferings were? Read Doctrine and Covenants 19:18–19, 24:
18 Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit—and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink—
19 Nevertheless, glory be to the Father, and I partook and finished my preparations unto the children of men.
24 I am Jesus Christ; I came by the will of the Father, and I do his will.
His sufferings made it possible for us to repent of our sins and be forgiven through faith in Jesus Christ? What do you think of that? Are you thankful for Jesus Christ?
Mosiah 3:7 And lo, he shall suffer temptations, and pain of body, hunger, thirst, and fatigue, even more than man can suffer, except it be unto death; for behold, blood cometh from every pore, so great shall be his anguish for the wickedness and the abominations of his people.
Have you ever been asked to do something difficult, by your parents, or by our Heavenly Father? Who do you know that can give you strength to help you face your challenges? Who helps us have the courage to be obedient to Heavenly Father?

God’s blessings are greater than the treasures of the
earth.
Doctrine and Covenants 19:26–41
Since The Book of Mormon didn’t sell well in Palmyra, Martin had to sell a large portion of his farm in order to pay the printer.
The Contributions of Martin Harris
Ponder Martin’s
sacrifice—and the blessings you’ve received because of it—as you read Doctrine and Covenants 19:26–41. (See notes below.)
What has the Lord
asked you to sacrifice? Have you sought to understand His will? Have you sought
for a desire and a way to proceed in doing His will?
Can you make these
sacrifices with rejoicing and gladness?
verses 15–20 Are you willing to repent, so you can move
forward?
15 Therefore I
command you to repent—repent, lest I smite you by the rod of my
mouth, and by my wrath, and by my anger, and your sufferings be

God’s blessings are greater than the treasures of the
earth.
Doctrine and Covenants 19:38
Pass around The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ Let everyone have a turn sharing what they love about it.
Martin Harris sacrificed a lot of his wealth so that The
Book of Mormon could be printed. He mortgaged his farm, which means that he
took out a huge loan with his farm as collateral. That means if he didn’t have
the money to pay back that mortgage, the bank would own his farm.
The Book of Mormon didn’t sell well at first in Palmyra, so Martin Harris had
to sell a large portion of his farm, so that the church count pay the printer
and be out of debt.
Doctrine and Covenants 19:38 38 Pray always, and I
will pour out my Spirit upon you, and great shall be your
blessing—yea, even more than if you should obtain treasures of earth
and corruptibleness to the extent thereof.
What did the Lord
say to Martin in this verse? Do you think as we pray more, that we can feel the
blessing of having the Holy Ghsot with us? Do you think Martin knew that the
gospel of Jesus Christ was worth way more than his farm or any other earthly
treasure there might be?
How can reading
scriptures like this help us gain more understanding, so that we can choose to
be more faithful and obedient? What can I sacrifice to be more obedient to God
and to help Him in His work?

Revelation given through
Joseph Smith, at Manchester, New York, likely in the summer of 1829. In his
history, the Prophet introduces it as “a commandment of God and not of man, to
Martin Harris, given by him who is Eternal.”
What do you learn
about Jesus Christ in Doctrine and Covenants 19? Record your thoughts, and ponder how these
truths about the Savior help you find peace. What does it mean to you to “walk
in the meekness of [His] Spirit”?
Vs 4 We all have
sinned and we all need Jesus. If we don't find faith in Him and repent, we will
have to suffer. He's already suffered for me. I need to accept His wonderful
gift for me, but loving Him and keeping His commandments.
Vs 10-14 No one
wants to suffer a severe punishment. God and Jesus are so merciful; but if we
are rebellious and unrepentant, if we don't receive their words and live the
commandments; we will need to suffer.
Vs 15-20 Jesus
already suffered for me. Repent, Heidi. He doesn't want you to have to suffer
again for the same thing he's already paid for. Choose to be humble; you know
that feels way better than when you are humbled because of haughtiness.
23 Learn of
me, and listen to my words; walk in the meekness of my
Spirit, and you shall have peace in me.
24 I am
Jesus Christ; I came by the will of the Father, and I do
his will.
Ponder Martin’s
sacrifice—and the blessings you’ve received because of it—as you read Doctrine and Covenants 19:26–41.
Vs 26 I command thee
that thou shalt not covet thine own property.
Vs 31 Just teach the
doctrine of Christ. Don't take people down winding roads; stay on the straight
and narrow path.
Vs 32 The doctrine
of Christ is enough. Don't complicate it.
Vs 33 You'll lose
everything if you slight the Lord's counsels and think you know better.
Vs 34 Start giving
away freely the things you don't need and don't use. Allow others the
opportunity to enjoy them. Don't worry about who they are disposed of in time.
They are temporary.
37 And speak freely
to all; yea, preach, exhort, declare the truth, even with a loud voice,
with a sound of rejoicing, crying—Hosanna, hosanna, blessed be the name of the
Lord God!
39 Behold, canst thou read this without rejoicing and lifting up
thy heart for gladness?
40 Or canst thou run about longer as a blind guide?
41 Or canst thou be humble and meek, and conduct thyself wisely
before me? Yea, come unto me thy Savior. Amen.
