The saints were joyful to receive D&C 45.
verses 3–5:
How does it make you feel to know that Jesus is pleading your cause before our
Father?
Vs 9 Also, He sent His everlasting covenant to bind us to
Him and to one another. Because of Him, my parents and their families joined
the church.
Vs 34 We know that He is coming to the earth again. This gives me so much hope,
even though He also warns us that there will be troubling times. Because of His
light, we will see the way.
7 For verily I say unto you that I am Alpha and
Omega, the beginning and the end, the light and the life of the
world—a light that shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehendeth
it not.
Oh Be Joyful in the Lord!
Jesus Christ is my Advocate with the Father.
Doctrine
and Covenants 45:1–5
What words or phrases in these verses feel especially
meaningful to you?
An advocate is someone who publicly supports or recommends a
person or cause. According to these verses, how does Jesus Christ do this for
you? What qualifies Him to do it?

(See notes below.)
2 Nephi
2:8–9 People the world over have to be taught about Jesus Christ and how
essential it is for us to trust in Him as our Redeemer who can save us from
sins and help us to become clean, so we can return to our Father. There is no
other way to do it, except through faith in Him and accepting the gift of His
atonement.
Mosiah
15:7–9 Jesus made intercession for us all. He obeyed His Father’s will and
satisfied the demands of justice. He’s redeemed us with His blood. We need to
have faith to accept that gift.
Moroni
7:27–28 Miracles are an eternal reality. Jesus is as God, the same forever.
He paved the way for us and answered the ends of the law. If I have faith in
Him, He will claim me as His own and I will cleave to every good thing. Jesus
dwells eternally with the Father, and He is my advocate with the Father.
Doctrine
and Covenants 29:5
5 Lift up your hearts and be glad, for I am in your midst, and
am your advocate with the Father; and it is his good will to give you
the kingdom.
62:1
1 Behold, and hearken, O ye elders of my church, saith the Lord your God,
even Jesus Christ, your advocate, who knoweth the weakness of man and
how to succor them who are tempted.

For Kids
Jesus Christ is my Advocate with the Father.
Doctrine
and Covenants 45:3–5
An advocate is someone who is there to help protect us and
support us and make sure that we can progress and have fairness.
Have you every stood up for a friend or a brother or sister?
You were advocating for them.
Has anyone ever helped you when you were struggling in
school or when you needed extra support? They were advocating for you.
Read Doctrine
and Covenants 45:3–5 Who is our Advocate with Heavenly Father?
3 Listen to him who is the advocate with the
Father, who is pleading your cause before him—
4 Saying: Father, behold
the sufferings and death of him who did no sin, in
whom thou wast well pleased; behold the blood of thy Son which was shed, the
blood of him whom thou gavest that thyself might be glorified;
5 Wherefore, Father, spare these
my brethren that believe on my name, that they may come
unto me and have everlasting life.
For Kids
The gospel of Jesus Christ is a standard to the world.
Doctrine
and Covenants 45:9
To raise a standard to the world, you might be raising a
banner or a flag that represents your beliefs and ideals. If you saw a banner
raised, it might mean to gather together for a purpose or for a battle.
Read Doctrine
and Covenants 45:9
9 And even so I have sent
mine everlasting covenant into the world, to be
a light to the world, and to be a standard for my people,
and for the Gentiles to seek to it, and to be
a messenger before my face to prepare the way before me.
How is the gospel of Jesus Christ like a standard to the
nations. Whose light is it that we are raising up? What are we inviting the
Gentiles to do, and who are we inviting them to seek and to follow? How can we
be standard bearers and messengers to help prepare the world for the Lord’s
second coming?
The gospel is a standard to the nations.
Doctrine
and Covenants 45:9–10
“Anciently, a standard was a banner carried into battle used
to rally and unify troops. A standard is also an example or rule that other
things can be measured against.”
Read Doctrine
and Covenants 45:9–10
How have your covenants with the Lord been a standard for
you?
10 Wherefore, come ye unto it, and with him that
cometh I will reason as with men in days of old, and I will show unto
you my strong reasoning.
Jesus Christ will return in glory.
Doctrine
and Covenants 45:11–75
Malachi
4:5 When the Lord comes again, will that day be great and/or terrible for
you? What do you make of your days currently?
Do the sober warnings frighten you? Do the hopeful promises
bring you excitement and joy?
verses
11–75 How can I prepare for my Savior’s return with faith instead of fear? Make
a list of the promises and what you can personally do. (See notes below)

For Kids
I can “stand in holy places.”
Doctrine
and Covenants 45:32
32 But my disciples
shall stand in holy places, and shall not be moved; but among
the wicked, men shall lift up their voices and curse God and die.
Tell the children that the temple is a holy place. Let them
know that we need to treat our church buildings as holy places. We partake of
the sacrament there and receive messages from church leaders and other
disciples. How can we make our homes holy places too? How can we make our own
minds and hearts holy places, so that the Holy Ghost can always be with us?
What are some places that are holy to you? Why?
To “stand in holy places, and … not be moved” means to
choose the right at all times, no matter what is happening.
I can “stand in holy places” and not be moved.
Doctrine
and Covenants 45:31–32, 56–57
Preparing to meet Jesus when He comes to earth again.
Doctrine
and Covenants 45:31–32, 56–57 We are seeing an overflowing scourge of
wickedness throughout the world. Total immorality and depravity, injustice and
greed. We do not have to become part of it, or be swept away by it.
Because I have been endowed with power from on high in holy temples, and
because I have been helping many others on this side of the veil and on the
other side of the veil to receive the blessings of the endowment, there will be
more with us than we them. Together we are standing in holy places and not
being moved by the evil of the world and the persuasions of Satan to lead away
the hearts of men to destruction.
It is important for me to choose the Holy Ghost as my
personal guide each day, so that I can be led by the love and wisdom of the
Lord and not be deceived. Having the Spirit with me is likened unto having oil
in my lamp. It’s more than having the Spirit, it’s following His promptings.
Matthew
25:1–13 Be prepared every day. We can’t lose the sight of the faith, hope,
and glory that we feel in anticipating His return. Get to know the Savior now.
Zion is a place of safety for the Saints of God.
Doctrine
and Covenants 45:11–15, 66–71
Are you eager for and do you put your energy towards
building Zion? The New Jerusalem will be here on the American Continent.
Ether
13:2–9 Are you choosing to serve the Lord in this precious land He has
given us? The New Jerusalem will come down out of heaven. Ether saw Christ’s Second
Coming and the New Jerusalem that would be built here. He also saw that the
Jerusalem of old would also be built up. Joseph’s seed will help to build it.
There will be a new heaven and a new earth.
18 And the Lord called his people Zion,
because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in
righteousness; and there was no poor among them. (We’ve got to become this
people.)
The Lord will reveal His arm on our behalf. These things
will not come about purely by our own works. But we need to remain faithful and
rely on the Lord Jesus, who has always been the one to fight our battles. Safety
will be found in the Stakes of Zion.
62 And righteousness will I send down
out of heaven; and truth will I send forth out of the earth, to bear testimony of
mine Only Begotten; his resurrection from the dead; yea, and also the
resurrection of all men; and righteousness and truth will I cause to sweep the
earth as with a flood, to gather out mine elect from the four
quarters of the earth, unto a place which I shall prepare, an Holy City, that
my people may gird up their loins, and be looking forth for the time of my
coming; for there shall be my tabernacle, and it shall be called Zion,
a New Jerusalem.
63 And the Lord said unto Enoch: Then shalt thou
and all thy city meet them there, and we will receive them
into our bosom, and they shall see us; and we will fall upon their necks, and
they shall fall upon our necks, and we will kiss each other;
64 And there shall be mine abode, and it shall
be Zion, which shall come forth out of all the creations which I have made; and
for the space of a thousand years the earth shall rest.
What do you learn about Zion in Doctrine
and Covenants 45:11–15, 66–71? (See notes below)
Think of what you can do to help build up Zion here in San
Bernardino.
For Kids
Jesus Christ will come again.
Doctrine
and Covenants 45:44–45
Help children to understand Jesus’s love for them and for
all children (and people). Show past stories of how he gathered children around
Him, how He blessed them and used them as an example to teach adults how to be.
Teach them how wonderful the world will be when He is here with us to rule and
reign in righteousness. Help them to look forward to His return with happiness
and joy. Ask them how they feel when they know special friends, relatives, or
grandparents are coming to visit. Let them feel the joy of anticipation, so
that they can prepare for His coming with faith and purpose and hope.
Share some pictures of the Savior and read Doctrine
and Covenants 45:44–45
44 And then they shall look for me, and, behold,
I will come; and they shall see me in the clouds of heaven, clothed
with power and great glory; with all the holy angels; and he
that watches not for me shall be cut off.
45 But before the arm of the Lord shall fall, an
angel shall sound his trump, and the saints that have slept
shall come forth to meet me in the cloud.
Explain that the righteous who have died will be resurrected
and meet Jesus as He descends to earth; and the righteous who are alive will
also be caught us to meet Him in the clouds of His glory.
Some of the hopeful promises are in these verses: verses
44–45, 51–52, 55, 58–59, 66–71 (See notes below)
Help children recognize the Spirit. As you teach
your children, tell them when you feel the Holy Ghost. Talk about how you
recognize His influence. For example, you might feel peaceful or joyful while
singing a song about the Savior.

Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet to the
Church, at Kirtland, Ohio, March 7, 1831. Prefacing the record of this
revelation, Joseph Smith’s history states that “at this age of the Church …
many false reports … and foolish stories, were published … and circulated, … to
prevent people from investigating the work, or embracing the faith. … But to
the joy of the Saints, … I received the following.”

their iniquities; then shall they lament because they persecuted their king.
54 And then shall the heathen nations

the first resurrection; and it shall be tolerable for them.
55 And Satan shall be bound, that
he shall have no place in the hearts of the children of men.
Vs 56-58 Be prepared. Every day and night, take the Holy
Spirit as your guide. Don't be deceived, and you will abide the day.
The earth will be given to you for an inheritance. We will
multiply and wax strong, and our children will grow up without sin unto
salvation.
59 For the Lord shall be in their midst,
and his glory shall be upon them, and he will be their king and
their lawgiver.

and teach, call on others to repent, build the kingdom.
65 And with one heart and with one mind, gather
up your riches that ye may purchase an inheritance which shall
hereafter be appointed unto you.
66 And it shall be called the New Jerusalem,
a land of peace, a city of refuge, a place of safety for
the saints of the Most High God;
67 And the glory of the Lord shall be
there, and the terror of the Lord also shall be there, insomuch that
the wicked will not come unto it, and it shall be called Zion.
68 And it shall come to pass among the wicked,
that every man that will not take his sword against his neighbor must
needs flee unto Zion for safety.

out of every nation under heaven; and it shall be the only people
that shall not be at war one with another.

shall be gathered out from among all nations, and shall come to Zion, singing
with songs of everlasting joy.
